Configure Outlook 2011 for Mac (Exchange 2007)

Manual Settings

  1. In Finder, under Go, select Application.
  2. Select Microsoft Office 2011.
  3. On the menu bar, under Tools click Accounts.
  4. Under Add an Account select Exchange Account.
  5. type your name, email address.
  6. Enter your username and password.
  7. Click Advanced.
  8. Under Microsoft Exchange Server type:
  9. Make sure the Use SSL Connection box is selected.
  10. Under Directory Service Server type:
  11. Make sure the Log in with My Exchange Account Credentials box is selected.
  12. Up window choose show Profiles.
  13. Choose Add.
  14. Enter a name for the profile (e.g. John Smith Email) and choose OK.
  15. Enter your Mailbox name, usually first and last name. (e.g. John Smith)
  16. Enter your Email address (e.g.
  17. Enter your Net ID password and confirm.
  18. Choose Next.


  19. The client will contact the exchange server and search for default settings.
  20. You may be asked to authenticate. Enter your User Name: exch\ followed by your Net ID (e.g. exch\jhsmith23)
  21. Enter your Net ID Password:
  22. Enter OK. 
  23. Choose Finish.
  24. The security window may appear again, if it does simply re-enter your login information 

Connection Setting

Once your email settings have been retrieved you will need to make one manual change. This change is not crucial, but will ensure the email account runs smoothly.

  1. From the Start menu open up the Control Panel.
  2. Choose User Accounts.
  3. Next choose Mail.
  4. Select E-mail Accounts... 
  5. From the list, highlight the profile you just created and choose Change from among the icons.
  6. In the bottom right corner, click More Settings. . . .
  7. At the top, choose the Connection tab.
  8. At the bottom, Select Exchange Proxy Settings. . . .
  9. Select both On fast networks.... and on slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP. 

  10. Click OK. Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.
  11. Close all other windows.

Manual Setup

If the auto setup cannot make the connection use these steps to manually create an account.

  1. Go to Start, and select Control Panel.
  2. Search or Navigate to Mail (32-bit).
  3. In the Mail Setup window choose Show Profiles.
  4. Choose Add.
  5. Enter a name for the profile (e.g. John Smith Email) and choose OK. 
  6. In the bottom left corner, select Manually configure server settings or additional server types.
  7. Choose Next.
  8. Select Microsoft Exchange or compatible service.
  9. Choose Next.
  10. Enter for Server: 
  11. Enter for User Name: Name of your Mailbox, usually your first and last name. DO NOT CLICK NEXT!

  12. Choose More Settings in the bottom right corner.
  13. Choose the Connection Tab
  14. Under the Connection tab select Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP

  15. Choose the Exchange Proxy Settngs... button
  16. Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange:
  17. Select Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate: 
  18. and in the following box enter
  19. Select both On fast ... and slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP.
  20. On the drop down menu under Proxy authentication settings, choose Basic Authentication.
  21. Choose OK.

    1. Choose OK to accept changes.
    2. Choose Next.
    3. You may be prompted to log in. Enter exch\ followed by your BYU Net ID. (e.g. exch\js224)
    4. Enter your BYU Net ID password.
    5. Choose Finish.

Log into Exchange through Microsoft Outlook

  1. Start Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Provide the required login information:
    • User Name: exch\yournetid 
    • Password: Net ID password.
  3. Click OK.
