CSRs and System Admins—Network

Network Tools

Campus Active Directory Organization

Campus Active Directory (CAD) is a BYU implementation of Microsoft Active Directory. It provides a single Active Directory domain that BYU uses to simplify the management of systems and users at the university. Any department may request the creation of an Organizational Unit (OU) into which they may place computers and security groups.

For information and details, see the Campus Active Directory page.

Domain Name Services Access

Domain Names Services allow campus departments to access network devices through a name instead of an IP address. This makes access network devices much simpler for departments and users.

For more details, see the Domain Name Services page.

Hostname Registration

CSRs can register DNS names to IP addresses using QIP. See the Hostname Registration article.

Jacks & Public IP Address

Network jacks are available for office use. To order the activation of a network jack, see the Wired Network Access page.

Network users can order a public IP address for their devices. There is an initial fee for this service. For details and ordering, see the Wired Network Access page.

Department Tools

Many departments have specific tools for the management of their responsibilities. To know what theses specific tools are and how they work, see the Department Specific Tools page.

Network Information Tools

CSRs and system admin have access to certain Network Information Tools (NIT). NIT is a group of network information and management tools which discover all network devices on the campus network on an hourly basis. It allows users to search a variety of data about the devices on the network and the performance of the network.

See the Network Information Tools page.

See the Network Device Registration page.

Online Resources

SOA Registry for Web Services

The SOA Registry is the repository for BYU Web Services. BYU Web Services are interfaces to BYU systems that provide University data that is consumed by other applications. The SOA Registry is primarily used to write applications that consume University data; and provide University data through their own Web Services for others to access.

The registry provides a way for developers to learn what web services are currently available at BYU and to consume data from those web services.

The SOA registry can be accessed at

For details, see the SOA Registry.

Network Filtering Exceptions

All BYU networks are filtered for content through the university filtering system. These filters block as much inappropriate material as possible. Exception to the filters may be requests, and will only be fulfilled for full-time employees.

For details, see the Web Filtering page.

For details, see the Web Analytics page.
