Brigham Young University is committed to providing powerful and reliable information technology resources and support to its students. The BYU Office of Information Technology seeks to ensure that students and faculty are provided with advanced and up-to-date hardware and software in order to improve campus communications, enhance faculty teaching capabilities, and optimize student learning experiences. This dedication extends to email services provided to BYU affiliates, as well.
Students can uses technology services such as Personal Information to optimize their experience while they are here at the university. Services like Email Alias Manager help students manage their email throughout their college experience, as well as after they graduate and continue with their professional careers.
Personal Information under Communication on myBYU stores addresses, phone, and email information for the university directory, and is the tool students use to keep their contact information updated. Students must keep their personal contact information up-to-date so that university personnel and fellow students can contact them.
Students who have entered an email address in the Personal Information system will not only be able to receive emails from important university contacts, but will also be placed in an emergency alert email database. Should an emergency situation ever arise at the university for which patrons need to be contacted, those whose emails are within this database will receive important alert information issued by the BYU Police Department. For more information, see Emergency Alert System.
BYU no longer offers a basic email option for its students. With the many email services available online (Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, etc.), BYU decided to discontinue the basic email service, seeing the lack of need and use.
Students are still provided with the Email Alias Manager option that allows the creating of a professional email address while retaining a common online email account. See Email Alias Manager for more detail.
Email Alias Manager is a free email-forwarding service that provides the ability to create a simple, professional email address (alias) through which you can forward incoming email to the mailbox of your choice. Supply your friends and associates with one stable email address—your alias—and change email accounts behind the scenes, as necessary.
To ensure that your email alias continues to forward to the correct email account, simply update your information under Email Alias Manager in myBYU each time you change email accounts. Email Alias Manager is available to BYU students and alumni—for Email Alias Manager this refers to anyone who has registered for at least one credit hour—and stays with you, even if you change your email account carrier. For more information, see Email Alias Manager.
