LastPass Enterprise is a unified password vaulting service for BYU employees. This service is provided for the purpose of storing privileged account information in a secure, documented, uniform manner. LastPass can be accessed through browser add-ons, a binary client, phone app and through the LastPass web interface. Examples of the types of information that can be stored in LastPass include:
The account name is your Exchange email address if you have an Exchange account, or it is email@example.com. If you do not have an Exchange account, the firstname.lastname@example.org address will be forwarded to your personal account as listed in your Personal Information. It is advised that your LastPass account be secured with multi-factor authentication. DUO works well with LastPass.
It is strongly recommended that a personal password vault is created and maintained separately from ones employee account. This personal account can be linked to the employee account for ease of access, but the information stored in the personal account remains the property of the employee and not the school. Administrators of LastPass will never have access to personal account information. Everything stored within the Enterprise employee account is considered property of BYU and has the ability to be accessed in the event the employee is not available to do so.
A key strength of LastPass is the ability to create folders, populate those folders with accounts and notes, and then share those folders with groups or individuals. This allows for teams to have a standardized, unified storage location for privileged accounts and information.
Any department wishing to install LastPass should contact OIT-Security for more information.
An email of invitation will be sent to your Account Name. Initial setup will be required and a master password for your account will be created. The email will also include a link to install the requisite software on your machine. The master password is not visible to admins or other users and requires a special super admin account to reset. Make sure to carefully create your password.
Possible fees for use of this service are still being determined.
