Hostname registration allows campus patrons to associate names (i.e. hostnames) to their network devices as identified by their IP address.
Domain Name Services
Domain Names Services (DNS) allow campus departments to access network devices through a name instead of an IP address. This makes access network devices much easier to access for departments and users. Most network devices will configure DNS settings automatically when using the network setting "Obtain an IP address automatically" or "DHCP". However, if you need to configure DNS manually, use the following IP Addresses:
There are two types of host names available through this order page: an A Record and a C Name.
For other types of DNS records (such as MX, NS, PTR, etc.) please contact the Operations and Service Center (801-422-4000 or email@example.com). Agents will fill out a generic order form or send an email -- on behalf of the user -- to Network Engineering. These order forms or emails should include the user's correct name, contact information, and the user's request.
This service is available to all active campus patrons including faculty, employees and students. It is not available to alumni, retirees or other non-active patrons.
Contact the OIT Service Desk for support.
There are three types of hostname registration:
Only hostnames in the byu.edu domain can be registered (e.g. mysite.byu.edu). If you wish to register a hostname in different domain (e.g. mysite.mydomain.com), then you must contact the owner of the domain (e.g. mydomain.com) or buy the domain for yourself.
The IP Address to which a hostname is registered can point to any valid IP Address in the Internet. This allows for campus patrons to use off-campus hosting providers and still have their network devices appear within the byu.edu domain.
Note: With the exception of a Go Link name, Hostnames are not case sensitive and will be registered as all lower case.
There is no charge for use of this service.
