Internet access in on-campus housing is now delivered via a single network connection in each apartment. The location of the network jack varies depending on the apartment complex. The Internet speed provided through the apartment wired connection is up to 1 Gbps. This is the maximum possible speed. Due to internet congestion and other factors beyond our control actual throughput from the Internet will rarely if ever approach that 1Gbps threshold.
Note:There may be more than one jack physically in the apartment, but only one will be active. The other jack will not work. Check both jacks before calling OIT.
The only areas covered by an OIT provided wireless network array in housing are commons areas and activity rooms in the complexes. If residents desire wireless internet access in the apartment they will need to provide their own wireless access point/router. They should coordinate with their roommates on who will bring the router.
The Office of IT does not recommend any specific brand/make of wireless access point. We do, however, recommend the following minimum specifications:
Note: Modem / Router combination devices should never be used as they create issues for all users on the network. (Dedicated routers will have a port on them that specifically says "Internet" or "WAN" while modem/router's only have LAN ports.)
To setup your wireless router, plug an Ethernet cable from the wired jack in your apartment into the WAN port on your router. The WAN port is often a different color, or labeled differently from the other ports.
When setting up your network, please note that the following names cannot be used:
The Office of IT can provide basic support for setting up your personal access point, however we cannot provide comprehensive support for every device that could possibly be brought into housing. We will ensure that each apartment has a functioning high-speed wired network connection.
If you need additional assistance please contact the OIT Service Desk.
Router/modem WILL cause intermittent issues with internet connectivity for the user and other users. If you have a modem/router you must get a dedicated router or the issues will continue.
