Aliases ending in @byu.edu are reserved for faculty and employees. In some instances, however, a student employee is allocated an @byu.edu alias when necessary for the job.
Any employee who leaves BYU other than by retirement will lose his or her @byu.edu aliases.
NOTE: As a general rule, all retirees are permitted to retain their @byu.edu email alias after leaving the university. However, individual departments may choose to close the BYU email alias as circumstances warrant. Retirees will need to log into myBYU and update alias information to forward email messages to a personal carrier.
BYU also provides each student the ability to create one @studentbody.byu.edu alias. These aliases will be lost when the owner loses student status. The name preceding the @ will always be the student's net ID.
Addresses ending in @byu.net are available for employees, students, retirees, and alumni. These addresses can be created and indefinitely retained by anyone who has been a BYU employee or student.

1A student employee can have up to two @byu.edu aliases if necessary for work.
Note: Email aliases that users create in the Email Alias Manager are not case sensitive. Any email that is sent using even randomly capitalized letters (even when it shows as all lowercase in EAM). This means that a user may give out their email address in a way that they think looks better because it has capital letters. Any email or variation of these letters will send to the email alias and be redirected to the correct forwarding email account. For Example: Britten_Hanson@byu.edu, BRITTEN_HANSON@byu.edu, bRiTten_hAnSoN@byu.edu, etc. will all send to email@example.com
Specialized aliases are granted automatically, based on a given role in the University Database. Once a user has been assigned a role, the option to register these aliases will display in the user's Email Alias Manager.
If you believe you should have access to one of these roles but it is not showing up in your Email Alias Manager, call the OIT Service Desk.
Available to Electrical Engineering faculty. There is a maximum of two aliases per faculty.
Available to current Marriott School majors and minors. This alias may be retained for up to three years after graduating from BYU. There is a maximum of two aliases per student.
Available to Marriott School alumni. This alias is reatined for life and will not expire. There is a maximum of two aliases per alumni.
CSRs have administrator rights to proxy as users and see their aliases, as well as the ability to reassign existing aliases and create new ones.
On the first of each month, @byu.edu and @studentbody.byu.edu email aliases will be assessed to see if there are individuals with these aliases who are not authorized to have them. Current full-time and part-time employees, retirees, current students and others are authorized to use these aliases. If aliases are found unauthorized, the user will be sent an initial email to that alias stating that unless their status changes, the alias will be removed after 30 days.
Note:Aliases are not reused. Once an alias is retired it will not be reassigned to a new user. An alias can be reassigned to a user who leaves the university and would like to claim the alias upon their return. Aliases can also be reassigned if the previous owner gives approval for its reuse. Other circumstances where an alias is requested to be reused can also be considered. Requests outside the usual guidelines for an alias should be directed to the email alias Product Manager. This policy is designed to help insure the security of user's email information.
