From duo.byu.edu:
"Two-step verification adds a second layer of security to your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
Once you’ve enrolled in Duo you’re ready to go: You’ll login as usual with your username and password, and then use your device to verify that it’s you.
No mobile phone? You can also use a landline or tablet. Verifying your identity can be done via stored codes, voice call, a hardware device, or the Duo Mobile smartphone app. Duo also lets you link multiple devices to your account, so if you forget your phone at home, you can use a backup landline or other device to securely login.
Forgot your tablet? Away from your landline? Duo can text you ten 7-digit passcodes that allow you to log in even if you’re away from all your devices. Store these in a safe place to use when you need them! Once you’ve used all ten codes, you’ll be sent another ten!
Sick of pushing buttons, answering the phone, and entering codes? Duo includes an option called “Remember me for 30 days.” If you select this option while logging in, your computer and browser will become your new verification method. As long as you log in with the same computer, use the same browser, and don’t clear your cookies, you’ll only have to manually enter the second step once a month!"
