myBYU is a portal that allows you to create a customized “personal” homepage that contains your choice of portlets, tabs, and services you access the most frequently. You can sync your calendars, emails, and other web applications with outside sources (e.g. syncing myBYU's calendar with your Google calendar).
myBYU allows students, faculty, staff, and alumni to create a customized page that centralizes and makes it easier to find the information and services you care most about.
myBYU provides a secure gateway to personal information and provides for “targeted” communications.
It works in all web-based mobile devices as well.
myBYU is available to all types of users across campus including students, staff, faculty, employees, alumni, and other affiliates of BYU. All that is needed to access myBYU is an active Net ID and password.
If after logging in you see “Welcome Unrecognized Person” in the header, call 2-4000. This usually means that you have a new affiliation to campus and that the systems have not yet completely synchronized.
myBYU is not meant to replace the public facing BYU homepage
The BYU Homepage (http://www.byu.edu) is the public facing page for BYU. It provides access to key information and services through all of BYU. It is not customizable and probably includes content that you may never need to access.
myBYU (http://my.byu.edu) is your personal set of web pages. It provides access to an ever-growing set of key information and services through BYU, but moves that content right to the forefront. It is customizable so you can show only the content that you care about most. With myBYU, you can create new tabs, move portlets around, change the look and feel (themes) and sync your BYU content with personal accounts outside of BYU. Make it your own!
You can add links to any web site inside myBYU, internal or external to BYU. The advantage comes when those links are replaced with actual web page content. While myBYU does not include a portlet for every service across campus, there is an ever-growing list of portlets. So, it is possible that much of the content you prefer is already available. If you don't see one that you would like then please contact 801-422-4000 to make a suggestion.
myBYU is a secure environment. Since you are required to log into myBYU with your Net ID and password, your myBYU personalization is yours and safely stored for you. The content you add will display the information related to you and your roles. For good tips about safe computing, select the "Be Safe" link at the top of the page.
If you are using myBYU from a public computer that can be accessed by other users after you are done, be sure to follow these important practices:
Yes, myBYU works quite well on any mobile device. You can access myBYU from your mobile web browser.
Route Y was moved off of the BYU Homepage into myBYU on September 22nd, 2011. All of the Route Y links previously found on the BYU Homepage can now be accessed from myBYU through the "Campus Links" portlet (Route Y Notifications, Route Y menu, access to authenticated services across campus, QuickURL). Campus Links is now found on the left sidebar of myBYU.
Portlets are small plug-ins (windows, applets) that are managed and displayed in a web portal. Portlets usually display parts of existing web pages (fragments) that are used to aggregate web content into the portal. The term portlet was chosen to suggest that portlets only contain the most important portion of the content, while allowing users to launch to the full web page view if desired. Portlets are arranged in a way that makes most sense to each user. They are usually very simple displays that provide only essential information, but useful in that a lot of key data can be displayed at once (much like a dashboard of a car). They are usually grouped and positioned by a category or role.
Select the "Add Content" link located in the menu behind the Customize button. You will see a menu with all of the available content that you can add to a tab. You can browse the categories, scroll through the content or search by keyword in the search box. Once you've selected the content you want, click "Add" and the window will be placed on the upper right side of the tab that is active or "drag" the portlet from the customize window to the desired location on the tab.
Watch the "Add, Move and Remove Apps" video for more information
Now that you have a portlet on your page, you can click and drag the window to another part of the tab by selecting the “double arrows” icon on the right side of the title bar of the portlet. You can delete a portlet by selecting the “X” on the title bar of the portlet.
This can be done in different ways.
Change the Page Layout (# of columns): Click on the tab that you want to move (to make sure that tab is the active tab). Then click the Customize button and select "Layouts". You can then choose another column layout.
You can maximize each portlet to take up the full window by selecting the maximize button on each portlet. Select the appropriate tab name to go back to the normal view.
Watch the "Maximizing Portlets" for more information.
Call 2-4000 or use the chat feature on https://it.byu.edu to ask a question or to make a recommendation for improvement (i.e.: myBYU feature, a new theme, a new pre-defined tab, or a new portlet.)
myBYU contains several key foundational portlets that allow for aggregation of content both internal and external to BYU.
Calendar Portlet: Allows users to combine calendars throughout BYU as well as external online calendars.
Announcements: The announcement portlet allows entities across the University to communicate messages and emergency notifications to the entire University (University Communications), to a department, a class, or to a person. Call BYU extension 2-4000 to find out how you can use this feature to communicate to your constituents. (Internal BYU notifications only.)
A Tab allows you to organize your content in a way that is meaningful to you. Normally content is organized by category (i.e.: Sports, News, Health & Fitness, etc.) or by role (i.e.: Student, Employee, Bishop, etc.).
You can add a new tab by clicking the "Add Tab" button on the tab bar on the right hand side of the page (if you can't find it, press ctrl+F and type "Add Tab"). A new tab will automatically be created and from here you can rename and customize the content in the tab.
You can add a tab that includes prepackaged content such as news, entertainment, etc. Select the Customize button and choose "Add Content", and select the Packaged Content option. You can browse the list of prepackaged content and select one to add to your layout by selecting "subscribe" on the upper right hand side of the prepackaged content description.
Watch the "Add, Rename, Move and Remove Tabs" video for more information
Click on the tab that you want to move (to make sure that tab is the active tab). Then hover your mouse over the "grabber" found on the left hand side of the tab. Your cursor will look like a four-way arrow and you can click and drag the tab to reorder.
To rename a tab, click on the tab that you want to rename (make sure that tab is the active tab). The current name will become highlighted. Select the name a second time to edit it. Select out of the tab to save changes.
To change the number of columns on a tab, click on the customize button and select "Layouts." From here you can choose another column layout.
Watch the "Changing the Page Layout" video for more information.
Click on the tab that you want to remove (to make sure that tab is the active tab). Then hover your mouse over the tab and click the "x" in the upper right hand corner of the tab. You will be prompted to delete the tab. The tab and all the content on that tab will be deleted. You will need to re-add any content again if you desire.
There are several possible reasons why you cannot add content into myBYU:
Make sure that you have the tab opened that you want to update. Once that tab is the active tab, don't click on the tab name. Make sure your cursor is in the right position for each function. To move a tab, your cursor needs to hover over the left side of the tab. To change the name, simply click the current name of the tab. To change the layout tab, make sure you go to the Customize menu and select "Layouts." Remember you cannot change the name of the Home tab.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, there are still some programs that require a separate login. Development teams across campus are working hard to eliminate them, but until then, you’ll need to re-authenticate for some services. We appreciate your patience!
Note: Changing this setting will prevent this warning from appearing on all webpages. You are changing this setting at your own risk.
This is a browser-controlled message that alerts you to the mixture of secure and non-secure items for a particular web page. Some portlets do not have content security (like weather, RSS newsfeeds, etc.) and so with myBYU you will always have mixed content (where some of the content is secure while others are not).
If the browser "back" button does not work and you get a warning that the page has expired, this is normally because the channel you are using is a self-contained application in its own right. These applications have their own navigation buttons which should be used.
This may occur when you have content (portlets) on your layout that is no longer available. This may also occur when you have added duplicate (Announcement or Campus Links) portlets on the same tab. To fix this call 801-422-4000 and they fix the problem for you. In very rare cases, they may need to reset your layout, which will cause you to lose all your myBYU customizations.
